I am a divorced 34 year old female from New York. I enjoy dressing up and going out. My radio is often set to the Top 40 station. I make friends easily and in a variety of social settings. Not the typical earmarks of a geek.
BUT I also play MMORPGs whith vigor, have created android apps and launched an internet business (inserting plug for my site here!).
So, who am I? What convenient tag can I pin on my chest?
I still need my boyfriend to help me buy a new computer that is going to be able to do what I need without getting ripped off. He also needs to remind me regularly which is the modem and which is the router (I don't know why I blank on that particular thing.) I call the one a "Blinky Box" which he, luckily, finds endearring. I can do some light troubleshooting, but a blue screen gives me light palpatations.
Not a full fledged geek, yet not exactly technically challenged, I wonder where this leaves me.
Average? Are the masses now half geeks? Is this merely an expected consequence of an increasingly technical world? Geeks are applauded, even envied. So is our new social standard, our aspiration, to be a geek?
I feel like I should find a genius best friend named Sheldon, invest in some quirky vests and list C+ as my interest on Facebook, all so I can stop living in some half geek pergatory.
